MSW is a two years full-time postgraduate degree course. Graduates from any discipline with 50% marks in aggregate (40% in case of SC/ST candidates) are eligible to apply for admission. Selection for admission is made on the basis of the performance in written test, group discussion, personal & parent's interview and career scores taken together.

Orientation cum Induction Programme: A weeklong programme is organized for fresh Social Work students to acquaint them with the course curriculum, concept of social work and practice skills.

Non-credit Pre-foundation (remedial) Course: The course is an innovative and intensive programme of 2 months duration, which will equip new students to face the requirements of the MSW course. This course will be administered before the initiation of the regular classes and will be non-credit in curriculum.

Classroom Instructions/Seminars/Workshops: Classroom teaching is conducted for four days a week. Workshops, seminars and extra-mural lectures by experts are organized regularly as part of the curriculum.

Field Work: Field work forms an integral part of social work education. Its objective is to enable students to integrate and reinforce knowledge acquired in the class in field situations. There are two patterns of field work.

  • Concurrent Field Work: It is a whole year programme. Students are required to visit slums/villages (in first year) or welfare organizations (in second year) twice a week for a minimum period of 60 days.

  • Block Field Work: After Completion of the final MSW-part II examination, students are placed in Development agencies/NGOs for a period of four-weeks with a view to provide them the opportunity to acquire some pre-employment work experience.

Rural Camp: Every year the students of First Year organize a rural camp for ten days in some interior areas of Orissa. The objective of the rural camp is to expose students to rural life and make them understand problems and various issues related to rural development.

Project Work: Each final year student has to undertake a minor research study and submit a dissertation before he/she is allowed to fill up forms for the University examination.

EXTENSION ACTIVITIES
Students of VISWASS, apart from their learning activities do undertake various outreach programmes mainly relating to health and education in slums and nearby villages. The institute provides all possible help in organizing such programmes. The students are also allowed to participate in local, state and national level programmes, which promote the quality of leadership in them. Interested students are also given the opportunity to associate themselves in on-going research projects and people centered development activities of VISWASS.

CAREERS IN SOCIAL WORK
There are a few occupations, which can match social work profession, as it offers the broadest range of opportunities and settings. The professional fields of social work encompass several areas of activity and /or specialization. Nonetheless, the employment opportunities for trained social workers are growth of elderly population, disabled, substance abusers, displaced persons, frequent occurrences of natural calamities etc. In India, trained social workers are being employed in large number in the field of welfare and development projects undertaken by both Govt. and NGOs-starting from local level to international level. They are also posted as development officers, social welfare officers, probation officers and education officers in Govt. services. At the national level a fresh social work professional earns an income between Rs.80,000/-1,20,000/- per annum. Some of the renowned NGOs and International NGOs, where social workers are recruited includes UNDP, UNICEF, WHO, ILO, CARE, ACTION AID, CARITAS, OXFAM, CRY, PRADAN, CAPART, etc.
